Mohs Surgery

Mohs surgery is a surgery that became popular in the 60s and 70s to treat skin cancer. It is an effective and efficient treatment for treating basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. Furthermore, this treatment spares the surrounding tissue from damage, and only acts upon the cancerous cells that need to be excised. Essentially, Mohs micrographic surgery involves cutting away thin layers of skin while looking for signs of cancerous cells. Once there are no more cancerous cells observable, the surgery is stopped. Mohs surgery is recommended by many doctors because it is not as invasive as surgical excision. However, it does take a longer amount of time to get an appointment to get Mohs surgery compared to a standard surgical excision. Furthermore, Mohs surgery will not be effective if the melanoma extends deep into the skin, which is why it is important to wear sunscreen and protect yourself from the harmful radiations from the sun.
